7 signs you’re ready to work with a copywriter

You can write your own copy. You can create your own content. It’s no secret that pretty much anyone can put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and come up with words to market and promote their business. And in many instances, that’s the right thing to do. Of course, I’d love to sit here and tell you the opposite: that EVERYONE needs a copywriter, right now (how good would that be for my client pipeline?!) but that’s just not the case. So, who is ready to hire a copywriter? And what are the signs hiring a copywriter is the right thing to do for your business? In this blog post, I’ll explain the key signs to look out for…

1.Your business does well already but your website is lagging behind

You’re established. You have clients. Work coming in. A business that is thriving. Well done, you! What an achievement. But despite all your success, you’re aware your website doesn’t quite reflect your position. If you feel like this, it’s probably time to get help from a web copywriter. Whether it’s refining your brand voice or making your web copy convert better, a copywriter can help you elevate your website’s success - which can be a huge part of your business’ success overall.

2. You’re investing in a new website

Similar to the above, if you’re at the point of having a brand new website, this is a fantastic point to work with a professional copywriter. Having a new website designed and built is a big investment so it’s worth doing it right - and that means the words, as much as the design.

3. Your audience loves your content but you don’t have the time to deliver regularly

You’ve checked out your stats - woah, people love your blogs! Social media posts are on fire. And your case studies go down a treat when pitching. You know how important your content is. But… you also know how time-consuming writing content is. Simply, content writing slips down the to-do list. And you think, I will definitely write that blog about that super important topic tomorrow or we’ll definitely get started with that case study tomorrow. And then as Ronan says, if tomorrow never comes…

A copywriter can take this burden off you, making sure your audience gets the content they love, on a regular basis.

4. Your blogs don’t perform as well as they should

Blogs are the cornerstone of content marketing - and can be an incredible way to cement your image as an industry expert. However, they’re tough going and sometimes businesses just don’t feel like they are worth it. Why? Well, blogs can fall flat for many reasons:

  • not search engine optimised (SEO) so people aren’t finding your posts when searching topics on Google

  • not very reader-friendly (needs to be easier to read)

  • not very engaging (perhaps your posts are just a little… boring! Sorry!)

  • no outreach strategy (not getting your blog posts out there!)

A copywriter knowledgeable in SEO can help you get the very most out of your blog strategy - so you consistently release blogs that your audience will love (and so will Google, for that matter!).

5. You’ve got ambitious growth plans but you can’t get going

You have an amazing new service to launch. It’s going to change the world. Or at least the industry you work in! However, when it comes to explaining what it is, how it works and why people should buy it, you get the ‘ick’. Nothing feels right and you can’t quite position it right - despite it being up there in your brain.

I work with clients to give them words confidence - that’s whether it’s a website sales page or regular blog posts. Think of it as striding into a room and knowing exactly the words that you need to say about your new service.

6. Your competitors are ranking better than you on Google

This is from a specific point of view. If your business wants to perform well on Google (it’s a key part of your strategy), but you’re not hitting targets, it may be time to outsource to an SEO copywriter - aka someone who knows how to write to please search engines.

That’s me! I’m an SEO copywriter and very au fait with what’s needed to please Google BUT I am also about great content for humans (because it’s the same thing really, but I’ll tell you that story another time…)

7. You have content and copy ready to go but never feel confident enough to press ‘publish’

“Can you get that content live?”

“Have you proofread that blog yet?”

“Has anyone checked the grammar?”

“Why isn’t the website showing the new copy?”.

There are many reasons why copy and content stay in the draft section of your website (or worse, in a Word document) for so long. And it’s usually a combination of time (lack of) and perfectionism (we need to check it before it goes live!). And thus, it never gets posted. If this sounds like you, it sounds like a copywriter who proofread and edits can help you.

I work with clients to go over their content and copy with a kind and critical eye and get ready to publish. And, I will make sure you do it. Remember, perfection does NOT exist.
