(and in general for all those 3pm pick ups!)
*being the best version of myself. It doesn’t always go so well.
A bit of different blog today! This is simply taken from my journal (the one I keep by my bedside table), noting down what I do to be more present, quieten my work life + actually enjoy the summer with my kid.
01. 5am wakeups are not cancelled.
They get a lot of stick online, and I GET IT. If 5am isn’t for you, like anything past 7pm isn’t for me, then so be it.
Why do I do this? Early mornings are quiet, and where I feel most creative. E is asleep, and a cup of tea first thing in my office is where the words (+ strategy) just allll come together so clearly.
Plus, after 7pm, you’ll find me doing something WAY less intense
(I love a REVERSE lie in — as a parent, it’s golden)
reading my latest novel I snapped up from the library
folding laundry
playing match the flying socks
booking our next holiday (love a holiday research night!)
watching netflix (true crime is always my fave)
voicenoting the girlies
embroidery (insert granny emoji)
02. Timers, timers, timers!
I love a bit of Toggl to keep me accountable. If a task is going to take me an hour, then I’ll be damned if it goes over.
P.s. Tasks DO inevitably go over. But it helps me plan better for next time — and that efficiency is 100000 per cent vital for a smooth(er) mama summer.
03. Phone on the windowsill during term time
I used to go DND, but then I worried about missing school calls. On the windowsill, I can hear my phone, but it isn’t so easy to pick up.
This works a treat for minimising distraction and being efficient with my workload.
04. Clear up-to-date pricing on my website
When potential clients reach out, I *know* that they’re clear on my value + what their investment will look like.
I also have a clear internal pricing matrix for bespoke projects — hello, headspace! B-bye, second-guessing my pricing for 4.7 hours before sending a proposal.
05. Daily, weekly, and monthly, quarterly goal setting
What do I want to achieve big picture, then work it backwards? What do the actions look like on a day-by-day basis?
I’m a Google Tasks fan. This keeps me focused on what I need to achieve, and what can wait (while I head out and make a mud pie with my E).
06. I prioritise SEO
I have a few blogs that perform well! And my core pages often rank on page 1 (like I rank position 8 for web copy services)
And I know that for every piece of content I add to my website, if I tell search engines (+ AI bots) clearly what it’s about, I’m more likely to show up.
So I keep this up. ALWAYS.
Hey Google, trust me… and send me traffic of ideal clients looking for exactly what I offer. Thanks xo
07. Ok, you can’t prioritise everything, but my website always has its time.
I’d love to tell you I prioritise my website all the damn time – as a website GAL.
But this is just not true — or possible, or practical, or *actually* strategic.
Instead, I have dedicated check-ins once a month to audit, make a plan for any changes…and implement.
This currently looks like revamping a sales page in September, while finishing off portfolio edits in August.
This way, my website has a PLAN. It doesn’t gather dust. I don’t wait for the perfect time.
And it continues to work for me, acting as a vital sales tool.
08. ‘Morning box’ of activities
When my son is at home with me during the holidays, he LOVES this!
Basically just a box of his existing toys, pens, colouring books, etc., on rotation – but different every day.
Super fun for him, and buys me 30 mins on those days where childcare is zilch.
(You can do A LOT in 30 mins, right?)
