Be bold with your brand voice, trust me!

Okay. Let me caveat this blog title with a disclaimer. When I say 'bold,' I'm not talking about trying to put on a façade or pretend to be something you're not. Trust me, that's neither fun nor sustainable for business owners.

What I'm talking about is embracing your true self, being unique, and breaking free from the mold.

Whether you're a remarkable solo entrepreneur or a thriving team of 300, embracing your authentic self in business comes with lots of lovely perks.

And guess what? In this blog post, I'm going to dive into the why behind it all.

6 reasons why a distinct brand voice is amazing

1. That brand voice that stands out? It stops the scroll.

Gosh, it's a noisy world out there, isn't it? You want your audience to notice you. Your voice – the words, copy, and content you put out there – plays a huge part in that. If you're unlike anything else, you'll have a much better shot at leaving a lasting impression. Yes, even on platforms like Instagram, where everyone and their cousin in your industry are trying to out-shout each other.

Remember, your audience can be at various stages of their 'buying journey.' Some are in the 'awareness' stage (they know about your stuff but aren't ready to dive in yet). On Instagram, I want these people to stop and think, "Hey, this is cool!" Maybe a few years down the line, they'll be ready to buy from me.

But if someone Googles 'website copywriting services' and lands on my website, I want them to feel confident enough to reach out. These people Googling? They're the ready-to-roll ones! In both cases, my brand voice has a critical role to play – it's like the spotlight that says, "Hey, check me out!"

2. Clear brand voices ooze consistency, and that’s a big part of getting results

You've heard it a gazillion times: consistency is the name of the game. When you keep that unique voice going across all your marketing channels – your website copy, your email content, your social content, etc. – you're building a strong foundation for brand recognition. Your audience will spot your voice a mile away and connect the dots back to your brand.

The highlight for service businesses with great brand voice and clear copy? When your ideal client jumps on a sales call with you, and your voice is still the same – oh, that's such a good feeling of trust, security, and clarity.

3. Bold brand voices feel ‘real,’ and your people relate - cue trust-building!

Imagine your friend starts a business. They try to act all fancy to impress a certain group of clients. They start talking differently. And it's just plain weird. After a few months, your friend's burnt out because they can't keep up the act. The clients they wanted to attract? Well, they saw right through it. It was exhausting for your poor friend.

Guess what? I've been that friend. I used to think I had to sound a certain way to attract clients. I wrote my website copy to sound ‘clever’. I agonised over email content. Every social media post was curated to be something I’m not. Ugh! But when I let my true self shine, I started attracting business owners who were, wait for it, just like me! And let me tell you, those clients are a dream to work with. They make my business such a nice place to be!

So, when I say, 'be authentic,' I'm not just throwing around buzzwords. I want you to trust yourself and talk the way you do. Your brand messaging will feel genuine and real. Plus, your audience is more likely to trust your brand and what it stands for.

4. That ‘they get me’ moment creates amazing connections with your dream prospects

Your voice – conjured up in your copy and content – is so much more than words on a page. Your brand voice has the ability to speak to someone on so many different levels, whether we’re buying a babygrow for our pregnant friend or we’re investing in 6 weeks of postnatal doula support. However big the sale, we want to feel ‘aligned’.

A unique brand voice will make you relatable, human, and inviting. Through your web copy, email content, social content, or even a simple phone call, it’s your opportunity to forge a deeper connection with your target audience – a vital starting point for achieving that sale.

I often say a brand voice should be conversational, whatever the subject, industry, or positioning. Because at the end of the day, people deal with people — and whether that means a conversation between two industry experts or a service user and healthcare provider, it’s always a conversation. So why try anything else?

5. You - yes, you, business owner - feel at ease when you’re YOU

From creating social content to writing copy for your website, when you’ve nailed your brand voice – it’s clear, it’s bold, it’s you – regular content and copywriting tasks within your business become so much easier.

Can feeling confident in your brand voice help when using AI copywriting tools?

Yes! While I don’t believe AI can totally emulate the soft empathy and creative play of your brand voice, you can absolutely train it to help you – injecting in elements of your brand voice when you’re struggling to feel creative. Being clear on how your brand voice sounds will help you use AI - like ChatGPT - better.

6. A bold brand voice makes brand stories stick

Sure, you can provide advice, deliver value, and talk about how amazing your business is. But wrap all that up in a story? Something unforgettable? Oh, yes, that's where the magic happens.

In a world drowning in information, we all rally around great stories that make us stop and listen. And your brand voice plays a huge part in that. Even the best story, told in a boring voice, will turn people off.

Want to weave more stories into your web copy and marketing content? But not sure how? Book a strategy call with me, and we’ll delve into your ‘how’.

So how do you create a bold brand voice?

Good question. It’s all well and good me standing (sitting) here and shouting (vigorously typing - think Kermit the frog meme) that bold brand voices are bloomin’ amazing. But how do you actually do it?

I'm not into wishy-washy advice, so let's get clear on some brand voice-creating actions. Here are a few things you can do to kickstart the process:

  • Record a meeting with an ideal client and review how you sound (do you sound natural and relaxed?).

  • Record a meeting with a not-so-ideal client and see how you sound with them (do you sound weird, awkward, or cringy?).

  • Get super clear on who you want to attract (picture your dream client as someone you'd love to have a chat with, someone you'd be thrilled to work with, or someone you'd want using your products).

  • Make a list of words you'd NEVER say (the cringeworthy ones).

  • Write down all the things you're cool with saying (have some fun with it!).

  • Read client testimonials or customer reviews and pick up the words your dream clients use (you'll want to sprinkle these into your content).

  • Revamp your existing copy (like your website) and challenge yourself to make it more 'you.'

  • Carry this voice through all your content and watch closely how your audience reacts. You can even measure your success with social metrics and website stats.

Still feeling lost with your brand voice?

Hey, you're not alone. Getting it right can feel like a bit of a puzzle – especially when people just tell you to 'be yourself.' It's never quite that simple.

As a copywriter, I'm a bit biased, but the best thing you can do is sit down with someone who knows the power of words – how they work for your business and how they sell for you.

Book a discovery call today and discover how I can help you nail your brand voice, clarify your message, and create content and copy that makes your audience go, "Yep, this is totally me!" (cue the wallet or Apple Pay coming out).
