Quick synopsis: This blog shares expert about page copy tips and website copywriting advice to help you write an About page that genuinely sounds like you *and* connects with your dream clients. Dive in for personality-packed, interesting ideas to make your About page something people *actually* love reading.
Even quicker synopsis: We’re turning the ‘ugh’ into ‘ooooh this is fun!’
Ah, the About page. The one that makes most people (read: everyone) want to slam their laptop shut and give up on their website. Okay, perhaps a little melodramatic, but bear with me… Because I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard: The About Page Copy Is The Hardest To Write. Ever.
And honestly? I get it. Even for an experienced website copywriter, the About page can be the trickiest part of your website copywriting process – giving us a right little wobble (or copywriting crisis – quelle horreur!).
And it’s good for you to remember:
Sure, your about page IS about you, but it’s written *FOR* them (them being your ideal client). It’s a page that creates connection, engagement and a bit of back-and-forth get-to-know-each-other vibes. Your ideal client should feel in sync with you, based on what you say on your about page.
And that means you can fully ditch the formal CV or curated bio vibes. Instead? Let’s make it feel more like a conversation. A connection point. A tiny bit fun, even — whoever you are, whatever you do + whatever your brand.
Because over the years, I’ve written About pages for wedding photographers, business coaches, website designers, interior designers, consultants… you name it. And no matter the vibe — whimsical, punchy, calm, bold — there’s always room for a little surprise. A little moment of joy. And that’s what I’m bringing to this blog post today. I hope it helps.
So here you go: 7 things to try on your About page to bring that spark of personality + connection. Let’s go, shall we?
Most my ideas start in my notepage — still a hand-written girlie despite allllll the tech —anyone else?
Could be from a movie. Could be from your beloved grandma. Could be that one Taylor Swift (or Shania Twain… that’s me 90s baby!) lyric that just hits.
These little snippets of what you love say a lot — without needing a long explanation. They set the tone of who you are and give your readers a peek into your values. It’s a small touch that immediately helps you connect on a human level.
You know that gorgeous note from a client that made your day? Or that DM where someone said, “You were in my head!”
Pop it in. Break up the copy. Add some real-person proof. It shows your authenticity and builds credibility in a way that feels natural. Screenshots are great here — and you can use some microcopy comment to back it up.
It’s a powerhouse when it comes to your website copywriting, that’s what it is! Learn how to do it here.
Something unexpected. Something real. Not just the awards + titles (though those matter too). But things like:
Pick something that feels you — and makes your ideal client think, “Oh, I like this person already.” It can also help you stand out in a sea of almost-too-perfect, cookie-cutter bios.
Stay with me. If you’re a bit playful in your tone, a ‘testimonial’ from your dog can add a fun twist. Something like: “She’s great with deadlines and even better at belly rubs.” – Margot, office assistant (cocker spaniel, age 5)
Mix in a real testimonial just after, and voila — light-hearted but still credible. Your pet’s “approval” is also a subtle nod to the personality you bring to your work — a reminder that clients should feel comfortable with you, just as they would with a good friend.
Of course, you can totally mix this up! This is just an example of interjecting an ‘in’ joke — but essentially this is a point where you can pull some copy that’s a breakaway from the norm about page bio writing. And that is SO refreshing – visually on the page + actually reading/ skimming the copy.
This one’s all about alignment. Show your website user (*and* potential client) what lights you up — it might be what lights them up, too.
Try something like: Perfect Saturday? Coffee in bed, a muddy dog walk, farmers market flowers, and a glass of ice-cold sauvignon by a crackling fireplace with my fave (tattered) novel.
You don’t need to make it perfect. Keep it authentic to you. If you’re the type who loves a Sunday lie-in, throw that in! If you thrive on action-packed weekends, share that too. The goal is to show what you truly enjoy and let your ideal client see the kind of life they can imagine aligning with yours.
Quickfire questions work so well for keeping eyes on the page. Try a “This or That” section (Tea or coffee? Beach or mountains? Planner or post-its?). Or even a mini quiz-style section to share facts about you in a fun, engaging way.
It’s an easy way to get your personality across without feeling forced. Plus, it’s an interactive moment that encourages engagement, which can keep readers hooked for longer.
Plus, if you’ve hired an epic custom website designer, I’m sure they’ll be able to bring your quiz to life in a really fun way. Check out my website designer recommendations here.
I think this one is a pretty cool way to add substance. Look, I never want to overwhelm your website user – but easy navigation is easy flow + natural choice. And that leads to a great experience!
Adding in a mini blog overview or podcast section is a great way to add authority to your bio. It says: look at all this expertise I have, without *actually* listing it all out.
Just be sure to make this section succinct. The way your website designer creates this can be more visual (less words), and include a nod to your resources – so users are free to explore, but also free to move past.
When we can be creative (and have fun!) copywriting is genuinely such an enjoyable experience. As a website copywriter, this is how I feel when I start wireframing + mapping out every project. I super encourage you to do the same – don’t think of your about page as flat website copy in a Google doc. Think of it as part of the website experience already – and don’t be afraid to play around with fun, fresh elements like the 7 above!
In summary? Your About page can be personal and professional. Strategic and smile-inducing. And if you’ve been staring at a blank doc thinking “Ughhhhh,” I hope this helped give you a few new ideas to play with.
